Dear Community,

I first started developing the HWD video sharing script for Joomla 1.0 in 2006, and have been lucky enough to be able to dedicated my professional life to it for 10 years. It was a pleasure to be part of the massive, and hugely exciting growth of Joomla in those early years. I'm proud that I was able to contribute to Joomla in my own way by developing and maintaining the popular HWD project. I was undeniably committed to the project throughout.

The Joomla 3 CMS is unrecognizable when compared to that first release. It is wonderfully superior.

Despite that, in recent years the popularity of Joomla has steadily decreased. I feel the community got exhausted by tricky upgrades, lack of backwards compatibility and inconsistent third party extensions. In many ways, it was the lack of concern about backward compatibility that allowed Joomla to make such astounding progress compared to its competitors such as Wordpress and Drupal. However, the ambition of Joomla's roadmap was not sufficiently communicated to the wider community, who simply wanted easy lives and websites that worked.

In addition to this, the file sharing of stable Joomla extensions has been prolific. This is of course perfectly legal due to the type of license that Joomla software is released under. The GNU GPL license is one that I passionately support. However, the ethos of sharing software exclusively to avoid giving back to the original developer simply stifles quality and growth in Joomla.

These issues have made it more difficult for development projects such as HWD to make enough income to continue investing their time into Joomla. I know that many other Joomla extension developers have experienced the same difficulties.

In recent months, HWD reached a critical point where a decision needed to be made about the future of the project.

So, what now?

The HWD MediaShare gallery is a great solution for sharing media content on your Joomla website, and can still be used for this purpose now and into the future. The software is developed using modern standards and is fully compatible with the latest release of Joomla.

Moving forward, what should you expect:

  1. The core functionality of HWD MediaShare will be maintained through new releases
  2. The compatibility of HWD MediaShare with Joomla will be maintained through new releases
  3. Core features that currently exist will continue to work
  4. New features will not be actively developed
  5. Support services will focus only on core functionality

This statement is given so that users can make an informed decision when considering a new subscription at HWD, or renewing at the end of their current plans. If you need longevity and a responsive development team who actively develop new features into the product you should consider seeking alternatives to HWD and planning your migration before your next renewal date. Remember to cancel your subscription, which you can do yourself in your account page. You will receive an email confirmation of your cancellation.
