To migrate, or not to migrate
After nearly a year of development, the first release candidate of the new HWDMediaShare component and the new HWD website was released on 1st April 2012.
Understandably, lots of users are eager to start using the new product immediately.
The aim of this article is to provide clear guidelines to existing users about migrating from hwdVideoShare and/or hwdPhotoShare to the new HWDMediaShare gallery.
What's new?
The new HWDMediaShare software is a completely new and different product from the existing hwdVideoShare and hwdPhotoShare packages.
- The workflow, processes, design and usability have all been completely changed.
- The template structure is different (it is now Joomla standard).
- No source code from the old software has been kept, everything has been rewritten.
- We have focused on building efficiency and simplicity from the ground upwards.
- The files for the new product are stored in a different part of Joomla (com_hwdmediashare), and has different database tables (jos_hwdms_*).
- It is only compatible with Joomla 2.5 (well, it will work on Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 but you should upgrade to Joomla 2.5 anyway).
What's first?
HWDMediaShare might be completely unsuitable for you!
- Look at the demo, is it what you expected?
- Install the component in a development environment. Does it work for you?
- Are the features you relied on in hwdVideoShare/hwdPhotoShare missing from HWDMediaShare?
Do you need to upgrade?
Ask yourself "how will the new HWDMediaShare component benefit me"? If you're considering upgrading client sites, you seriously need to consider the benefits of this compared to the workload. Have your clients asked for an upgrade?
We will be maintaining security releases of hwdVideoShare and hwdPhotoShare for the foreseeable future, so maybe you only need to start using HWDMediaShare for new design projects you start?
Be realistic!
HWDMediaShare is brand new out of the box today! Is it worth taking it for a spin in your development environment before taking the plunge on your production site? Answer: definitely yes.
Migration warnings
Be aware that the migration tool will move your videos and photos from hwdVideoShare and hwdPhotoShare into the HWDMediaShare gallery. However, there will be some information that will NOT be migrated.
- Your existing template and configuration will become irrelevant in the new gallery, and this information will not be migrated.
- Information from remote sources, such as comments that are associated remotely with the hwdVideoShare or hwdPhotoShare component might not be migrated.
- The URLs of videos and photos of the new component will not be the same as your existing URLs.
We will provide specific guidance of issues which concern users most when these queries get raised.
Yep, I want to migrate!
We have worked extremely hard to bring in the first RC release of HWDMediaShare on time. However, in the interests of stability and causing less frustration amongst users, the migration tool has not been included in this release. Not only do we need to make sure the migration tool is fully stable, but we also want to allow some time for any important bugs to be reported with the new HWDMediaShare before we allow the existing community to migrate.
Although this means you need to wait a few days, we are confident this is preferential when compared to a significant number of users encountering avoidable problems during the migration.
